At the Autodromo Nazionale Monza it is a challenge of traverses with the Italian drifting champions

Alberto Cona wins in the first absolute race of the Italian Drifting Championship in the Temple of Speed

A good first for the debut of the Italian Drifting Championship at the Autodromo Nazionale Monza. The race, held in a stretch of the Ascari variant and a novelty of the Temple of Speed calendar, attracted a large number of spectators who watched the pilots drift throughout the day. The event, organized by D-Race and ACI Sport, gave a show to the sound of evolutions and crossings on the track.

The drivers - divided into the two classes in the Pro and Pro2 races - first tested the cars in a long free practice session that began at 8:30, and then battled it out when the stakes really mattered, both in the qualifying heats and in the afternoon races. . All performances were carefully evaluated by the three 2022 race judges: Davide Busi, Nicolò Rosso and Claudio Varrica.

Alberto Cona confirms himself as the best, at least in the debut race of the queen Pro category. After the triumph in the series in 2021, the Italian driver opened the season with a victory, putting behind the other sixteen competitors at the start. Summing up the qualifying and race results, the score of Cona's BMW M3 was higher than that of Alberto Meregalli, on a Nissan 350Z V8, and of the French Alexander Strano, on another BMW M3.

At the head of Pro2 is Simone Milani. With his BMW M3 E46 he climbed to the top step of the class podium after being the best for the jury even at the end of qualifying, with 81 points. Behind him were Rocco Lopiano in a Nissan S13 and Christian Stocco in a BMW E46. Worthy of note is the performance of Lopiano, able to recover 5 positions from qualifying - which he had finished in seventh place - finishing second. Stocco was fourth at the start of the race and overtook Marco Stellino, grabbing the third position.

At mid-day, during the break of the dynamic activity of the Italian Drifting Championship, the sixteen GT cars that participated in the MonRace GV Cup 2022 , a competition in memory of Gilles Villeneuve, also entered the Circuit. The cars lined up in paddock 1 at 1.30pm and left for a parade both on the historic Monza elevated roads, where they completed a complete lap, and on the road layout, where they completed three laps. Among the entrants, the presence of five Ferraris should be noted. At the end of the day, the participants who best expressed the spirit and style of the event were awarded on the podium of the Circuit, in the year of its centenary.

The sports calendar for the Temple of Speed now continues with the return to the Brianza Circuit of the 1000 Miglia, the most famous regularity race in the world, scheduled for Saturday 18 June. On the same weekend, the Autodrome will also host the dynamic phase of the MIMO - Milan Monza Motor Show, with free access for all MIMO Pass holders and the opportunity to try supercars on Sunday 19 June, on a Track Day dedicated to collectors. and passionate. All information on the event is available on the website www.monzanet.it. (fm )

Peugeot will make its debut at the 6 Hours of Monza 2022 in the WEC as announced in the entry list

The long-awaited Peugeot 9X8 will make its race debut at Monza for the fourth round of the 2022 FIA World Endurance Championship on 10 July and will join the second largest parterre in FIA WEC history.

Paul di Resta and Loic Duval will lead the teams for the fourth round of the FIA WEC respectively entered under numbers 93 and 94, with the remainder of the driver line-up consisting of the team of Mikkel Jensen, Gustavo Menezes, James Rossiter and Jean-Eric Vergne, yet to be assigned to specific cars.

The 6 Hours of Monza takes place one month after the 24 Hours of Le Mans in June and, beyond the entry of the Peugeot, the Hypercar class remains unchanged with the winning Alpine at Sebring, which is currently ahead of the Spa winners, the Toyota, and Glickenhaus enters the title race before the most important race in La Sarthe. With the pair of Peugeots, the Monza class will consist of six cars, with two Toyotas, an Alpine and a Glickenhaus in action.

In LMP2, the lineup of cars and drivers is the same as in Spa, with one exception: Penske # 5 which will retire for the rest of the season after Le Mans and will therefore not be present at Monza.

In LMGTE Pro and LMGTE Am it's all like in Spa, with 5 cars (a pair of Ferraris and Porches against a single Corvette) and in the AM, there are 13 cars, with 5 Ferraris and Porches against 3 Aston Martins.

Monza has been included in the WEC calendar since last year, but previously it has been the protagonist of several endurance racing series. The iconic race venue, located in one of the largest city parks in Europe, offers a real party for fans and riders. Before Monza, of course, there will be the Jewel of the Crown, the 24 Hours of Le Mans with double points, and everything could change in the standings.

The action in Monza will be with free practice on Friday (8 July) afternoon, other free practice on Saturday (9 July), then qualifying on Saturday evening and after the actual race which starts at 12.00 CET on Sunday 10 July.
The complete list of entrants to the 6 Hours of Monza can be consulted here .

During the day, a jury will assign a score to each performance in the qualifying and race sessions, decreeing the final podium of both categories. For 2022, the judges will be Davide Busi, Nicolò Rosso and Claudio Varrica. The competition will be broadcast live on the Italian Drifting Championship YouTube channel and on the Drift Italy Facebook page.

Redaelli: «GP 2022 data heralds an incredibly successful edition»

Giuseppe Redaelli, Chairman of Autodromo Nazionale Monza: «We are proud that the Chairman of the Italian Tennis Federation has chosen the Formula 1 Grand Prix of Monza as a reference: he confirms that it's a great sporting event followed in the 5 Continents. And we are even happier that in Italy also other events equal and overcome our successes, because they are a tangible element of the sporting excellence of our Country and of the role, also economic, of Italian sport. The sport is in solid recovery, after two dramatic years of COVID, as witnessed by the data for the Formula 1 GP in Monza in 2022 to be held next September and which - we highlight - already mark a clear improvement also compared to 2019 and therefore herald an edition of formidable success, precisely in the year in which the centenary of the Autodromo Nazionale Monza is celebrated. It should also be remembered that the running of the Formula 1 Grand Prix, as in previous years, is carried out with the sole resources of ACI, which notoriously does not receive any form of public subsidy, net of a partial contribution guaranteed by the Lombardy Region ".

The reception and assistance services will be managed, with the collaboration of the Circuit, by a social cooperative that supports the employment of employees who, for various reasons of hardship, find it difficult to meet the world of work.

Giuseppe Redaelli, President of Autodromo Nazionale Monza, explains: "The return of the traditional enthusiasm of fans from all over the world for the Formula 1 Pirelli Grand Prix of Italy is now a certainty thanks not only to the restoration of the full capacity of the stands and lawn but also and especially the fantastic return to the podium of the Scuderia Ferrari. This year's edition will remain in the hearts of enthusiasts also because we will celebrate the centenary of the construction of the Circuit and at the same time the 150th anniversary of Pirelli which, as a novelty, is the Title Sponsor of the Italian Grand Prix. The weekend will therefore be exciting for the audience present on the circuit, but it will also be a great party for the whole territory, with a program full of entertainment even off the track. It will be a significant sign of thanks also to the institutions and in particular to the Lombardy Region, always attentive and aware of the importance that the Circuit has for Brianza and for the economy of the entire region ».

Alessandra Zinno, General Manager of the Monza National Circuit: «The Italian Grand Prix is of special importance this year for several reasons. Italy will host two races of the F1 World Championship, the only country in the world together with the United States, thanks to the great work of ACI and the passion and willpower of its President, Angelo Sticchi Damiani. The Monza race will then be an unmissable event for motorsport fans because it will take place exactly one hundred years after the first GP hosted by the Temple of Speed. On this important anniversary, we will finally be able to welcome the public with full capacity so as to give back to the National Circuit and Monza what makes it unique for the whole season: the warmth of its Fans. We are working hard to open other stands in the coming months, in addition to those already on sale from today, and collaborating with the Municipality of Monza and the mayor Dario Allevi, whom I want to thank, in order to receive the public in the best possible way. Monza is thus ready to welcome the greatest number of fans, and beyond, of the most attended editions of the Italian GP ».

The cycling champions of the FCI train at the Autodromo Nazionale Monza

Thanks to an agreement with the Federation, the Circuit becomes a Federal Center of Interest until the end of 2025 for the preparation sessions of the blue team.

The Autodromo Nazionale Monza becomes a Federal Center of Interest for the training of national cycling teams. Thanks to an agreement signed between the Circuit and the Italian Cycling Federation, the Temple of Speed will make the track available to the Italian athletes for training sessions until the end of 2025.

The partnership is particularly important for the Italian time trial team because it will allow national cycling teams to prepare for the European and World Championships, which will be respectively between 11 and 21 August in Munich and between 18 and 25 September in Wollongong. in Australia. The racetrack wants to make training possible in complete safety for the athletes who will bring the colors of Italy to the Championships, giving them complete serenity for training.

The track will therefore be used mainly in the summer months, compatibly with the activities already included in the calendar, by athletes such as Filippo Ganna (2 times world time trial champion and Olympic champion), Jonathan Milan and Simone Consonni (Olympic quartet champions), Elisa Balsamo and Elisa Longo Borghini , respectively world and Italian champion, and the winner of the Amstel Gold Race, Marta Cavalli .

The agreement, signed by the Director General of the Autodrome Alessandra Zinno and by the FCI President Cordiano Dagnoni , also provides for the organization of sporting events and events that will involve the national team.

The presence of the teams will therefore be an excellent opportunity for the promotion of cycling and the dissemination of the values of the discipline, including the principles of inclusiveness and respect for the environment also dear to the Monza National Circuit.

There will not be space only for professionals because, finally after so many months of being unable to access due to the emergency situation, the track will be open during a few evenings during the week in spring and summer to cyclists and amateur runners who wish to spend a few hours on the circuit. improving their performance, also in complete safety. The Circuit will then publish the calendar of access evenings week by week on the monzanet.it website.

Alessandra Zinno, General Manager of Autodromo Nazionale Monza: "While we are completing the launch of the 2022 Formula 1 Italian Grand Prix ticket office for our fans and enthusiasts, we also continue to work to differentiate the offer of events and the public who wants live the Circuit. Our commitment led, in the centenary year, to an agreement also with the Italian Cycling Federation. We are looking up at our horizons, enriching the seasonal calendar with other sports disciplines, in addition to the important motorsport weekends. Being able to count on an institutional and prestigious partner such as the Italian Cycling Federation clearly demonstrates the central role that the racetrack is recognized in the sporting world ».

Cordiano Dagnoni, President of the Italian Cycling Federation: «For us it is an important opportunity because in this way our athletes will be able to train in a specific exercise such as individual or team time trials. The racetrack is the perfect environment to carry out racing simulations and tests. We just have to thank the company that manages the structure, ACI, DG Zinno and Marco Velo who had the idea for the realization of this project ».

Dagnoni adds: «Our boys and girls of the Nationals are not used, for example, to train with the time trial bike all together and therefore on this Circuit it is possible to work together and refine. These are details that can be fundamental, in fact I remember that last year at the World Championships in Flanders we won an important medal for a few cents. We will try to make the most of the days and time slots that are also granted to us for the purposes of research and development of materials in view of Paris 2024 ».
