Becoming a racing car driver, the profession that everyone dreams of
Short guide for those who want to become a racing car driver: requirements, ACI courses and medical examinations to obtain a sports license. The official way to realize the dream of racing on a track like a real motorsport driver. To many it may seem like an unattainable dream, but that of a sports car driver is a profession in all respects, with its own rules and entry criteria. And the truth is that obtaining an ACI Sport license to race on the track like a true professional is not a prohibitive goal reserved for a select few. Of course, it’s not even simple, but if you’ve always dreamed of being a pilot , it’s right that you give yourself a chance. Who knows, one day you could be the protagonist of a race on the track of the Autodromo Nazionale Monza, the Temple of Speed. This short article is intended to be a quick and easy guide to becoming a racing car driver by earning a sports license . Let’s go!
How does a Formula 1 driver train?
The requirements to become a car driver
An aspiring sports driver , by law, does not have to satisfy any particular requirements . All that is required is a minimum (and maximum) age and possession of a road driving license.
The age to become a pilot
As for the age requirement, you must be at least 18 years old and not older than 80 , the age limit beyond which you are considered no longer capable of driving a sports car on a professional circuit. A clarification, however, is a must. In fact, the minimum age is required for sports licenses , but getting behind the wheel is an activity that can be started at 6 years old (in the case of karts) or 15 years old (for sports cars on a closed circuit).
The driving license B
The second requirement is the possession of a type B driving licence , the one normally required for road circulation with vehicles that do not exceed 3.5T in weight. Obviously, if you have a higher level driving license, these are equally accepted.
Minimum age | Maximum age | Driving licence |
18 | 80 | Type B |
How do you become a car driver? The complete path
Do you meet both the age and driving license requirements? Well, then your journey towards acquiring a sports license can begin by submitting the appropriate application at the Sports Offices of the Automobile Club Italia (ACI) , which are present in every provincial capital .
The necessary documents
During the process of obtaining your driving license you will be asked for :
- Valid identity document ;
- ACI membership card;
- Certificate of psycho-physical fitness for competitive or non-competitive activity (issued after medical examination, to be carried out at an accredited Sports Medicine Center);
- Tetanus vaccination certificate;
- Payment of the license fee (see the updated ACI Sport price list and find out how much it costs to become a pilot).
The course for aspiring pilots
However, bureaucracy is not enough to become a pilot. It is also necessary to participate in the courses organized by the ACI , which are free, are activated throughout the year and require the issuance of a certificate. They are simple theoretical lessons, without final exams, aimed at explaining the basic rules of motor sports (here is the list of ACI courses scheduled for first licenses ). The main topics covered are:
- the sports system;
- the types of license;
- car approvals;
- the conduct of the competitions and the role of the professionals involved;
- the meaning of the flags displayed in the race;
- sanctions for technical and sporting irregularities and related complaints.

On the Monza Autodrome
L'Autodromo Nazionale Monza is the second oldest racetrack in the world still in operation after Indianapolis. Built in 1922 in just 110 days, the circuit is one of the longest-running on the F1 calendar and the fastest in the championship. For this reason, it is also known with the nickname "The Temple of Speed". In addition to the road track, on which almost all the races of the year are held, it includes the Junior track and the High Speed Ring. Recently and in addition to these three tracks, the Monza Circuit Karting was also installed in the Autodrome, a semi-permanent kart track for adults and children. The Autodromo Nazionale Monza can host more than 130 thousand people, generating an annual turnover in Lombardy of 125 million euros. The Circuit celebrates its centenary this year.
THE CITY "PASSPORT" IS BORN
The capital of Brianza is also growing as a city with a tourist vocation.
For favor the attractiveness of Monza , the Municipality with its Civic Museums, the Villa Reale and Park Consortium, the National Circuit and the Museum of the Treasure and the Duomo offer, starting next Thursday, January 27, visitors the Tour of Monza in 60 days through the new “City Passport”.
“ The passport of Monza is a fundamental step towards a finally integrated tourist offer - explains the Mayor Dario Allevi - Investing in the attractiveness of the city means enhancing an enormous historical, artistic and monumental heritage: we have what it takes to aim even higher and forge alliances strategies capable of making us fully become a city with a tourist vocation ".
Upon first access to one of the places managed by the project partners - Autodromo Nazionale Monza, Villa Reale, Duomo Museum, Civic Museums - visitors will pay full admission. Subsequently, by showing the tax receipt, or the ticket, or the Passport, they will be able to access by paying the reduced rate.
The Monza tour in 60 days: why a passport?
The title of the initiative is inspired by the famous novel by Jules Verne, Around the world in 80 days to offer visitors to our city 60 days available to discover the iconic places of Monza and access the main points of interest.
Hence the choice of a passport, a symbol of the journey and the discovery of new destinations, in which the partner's stamps will be affixed gradually. The stamp will be proof of full-rate access to the first point of interest so that it can be shown to access the subsequent ones at a reduced rate. The discount applied is approximately 20% of the full ticket price.
"We have worked for years to achieve this important result: thanks to this project we hope to bring visitors back on several occasions - explains the Councilor for Culture and Tourism Massimiliano Longo - multiplying the opportunities for staying with an undoubted return on our activities as well. receptive and commercial ".
Ticket offices and Infopoint
Personalized exhibitors will be set up at the ticket offices of the various points and at the tourist Infopoints: here it will be possible to collect the passport , which will also offer historical and artistic notes of the four points of interest and useful information.
“This project promoted by the Municipal Administration is in line with the aims of the Consortium: an important and ambitious initiative for the knowledge of the city's heritage. The 'tour' allows the visitor to become loyal with a unique proposal. The Villa Reale and the Autodromo Nazionale Monza are increasingly interested in being a strong attraction pole for the whole territory capable of promoting the other civic museums of the city ", he adds. Giuseppe Distefano, General Manager of the Villa Reale and Monza Park Consortium .
“It is an honor for the Museum and Treasury of the Duomo to be part of a project that enhances the artistic and cultural heritage of the entire city of Monza. This initiative fits perfectly into the vocation and spirit of patronage of the Gaiani Foundation, born precisely with the aim of conserving, promoting and enhancing a unique and at the same time universal historical-artistic heritage, such as that of the Basilica of San Giovanni Battista and the legacy by Teodolinda. The origins of our city are intimately linked to the Queen and her far-sighted vision of peace and dedication to our territory, just as the Iron Crown has been a symbol of importance and prestige for Monza for centuries. We are grateful to the promoters and partners who have made this collaboration possible, which we hope will be a first step towards an ever greater growth of Monza tourism, aware of the great potential of our city ", he adds. Titti Gaiani, President of the Gaiani Foundation .
Alessandra Zinno, General Manager of Autodromo Nazionale Monza, comments: "Monza is investing heavily in tourism with the ambition of becoming one of the major attractions not only in Lombardy but in our entire peninsula. An excellent demonstration of the potential was highlighted by the increase in the flow of visits after the recent Rai1 program conducted by Alberto Angela dedicated to the city. We could not fail to find a strategy that would allow the most prestigious attractions of Monza to be coordinated in a single shared project. I am sure that this strategy will provide an even more important impulse to tourism in Brianza and that the Autodromo Nazionale Monza will make a significant contribution to the successful outcome of the initiative, with the opportunities it already offers - including the newborn Monza Circuit Experience and its guided tours - and with further future projects. The Temple of Speed has always been affirmed, in its century-old history, as a universally known and appreciated pivotal point, and certainly ta the proposal will lead to a further benefit due to its attractiveness to both Italian and foreign visitors ".
A course for the restoration of vintage cars is born at the Autodromo Nazionale Monza
New training activities in the future of the Brianza Circuit. In partnership with MTS Motorsport Technical School, fifteen students will specialize in the preservation of historic cars. Collaboration with the vocational school extended until 2024.
Autodromo Nazionale Monza, in collaboration with MTS Motorsport Technical School, launches a professional course for the restoration of vintage cars . The collaboration between the Temple of Speed and the technical training school in the world of two and four wheels is enriched for the year 2021/2022 by a new training course conceived with the Monza circuit. Fifteen students will in fact have the opportunity to specialize in the restoration of historic cars thanks to a 104-hour training module curated by the teachers of MTS, professionals in the automotive world with experience in the main motorsport championships.
The collaboration between Autodromo Nazionale Monza and MTS Motorsport Technical School
A multi-year collaboration is therefore consolidated between the Autodromo Nazionale Monza and MTS Motorsport Technical School , which organizes and manages specialized training courses for mechanics and engineers in the motor field and has already allowed over 80% of the students involved to find employment in their respective sectors, even at the highest levels.
Thanks to the agreement signed between the General Director of the circuit Alessandra Zinno and the founder and CEO of the Eugenia Capanna school, the professional courses of the school will be held in the spaces of the Autodromo Nazionale Monza until November 2, 2024 . Even the students of the newborn "classic car restoration course" will be able to study and practice in the classrooms of the Temple of Speed, discovering the secrets of the most important vintage cars and learning the art of restoration and conservation, to take care of them. the merit and the value.
Alessandra Zinno , General Manager of Autodromo Nazionale Monza: "The Temple of Speed will give impetus to new and articulated training activities, also in the sectors in which an educational reality such as MTS operates, which for some time has been organizing and managing courses for Motorsport mechanics and engineers. However, this agreement has a different and innovative spirit, which aims to bring the collaboration between the two companies towards experimental sectors of common interest. The training planning - which we will carry out together - of the classic car restoration course fits into this context, useful for transferring in-depth skills on historic cars to students, which we will take as a learning model with classroom lessons and coaching sessions. ".
The historic car restoration course
Zinno continues: “The course will start in spring and constitutes a further initiative of attention not only to the history and value of cars of historical interest, but also to the support of a world of true fans of the sector. It is a project that goes in the right direction one step away from the 100th anniversary of the Circuit , with members who will be able to experience their didactic phases in a place that has marked the history and, I would say epic, feats of motorsport in Italy ".
Eugenia Capanna, founder and CEO of MTS, adds: "The ten-year collaboration between MTS and Autodromo Nazionale Monza, which is consolidated from year to year, becomes increasingly synergistic with new training proposals such as the restoration course of historic cars for which we are proud to make available our working method and the skills of our teachers, which range from the world of competitions to the management and restoration of high-level historic cars. The fascination of classic cars is such that the MTS team, despite having a dealing with the maximum technological expression of the most innovative racing cars, boasts teachers who never miss an opportunity to work on vehicles that have made the history of automotive mechanics. Hence their great experience ".
Thanks to the renewal of the collaboration, Autodromo Nazionale Monza thus proves to be a point of reference in the field of training and growth not only for the many young people eager to establish themselves in the motor industry but also for the companies promoting these offers. ( fm )
The Autodromo Nazionale Monza protects the woods of the Park with a project worth 160 thousand euros
Almost 6,000 new native plants will be planted in the forest areas around the circuit to curb the spread of invasive alien species.
The improvement of the composition and floristic richness of the woods and their enhancement from an ecosystem point of view. These are the objectives of a large forest improvement project that the Temple of Speed will carry out over a five-year period. The interventions will concern the wooded areas in concession to the circuit inside the Monza Park and will involve the planting of almost 6 thousand new native trees.
The intervention plan on the Monza Park
The program, commissioned by the Monza National Circuit and designed by a pool of agronomists and forestry doctors hired by the circuit, obtained a loan of approximately 160 thousand euros from the Lombardy Region as part of a call published by the Directorate General for Agriculture, Food and Green Systems . The full-bodied study, authorized by the Valle del Lambro Regional Park and the Archaeological, Fine Arts and Landscape Superintendence and reviewed by independent agronomist experts, includes two different work plans.
The first will affect an area of just under 12 hectares , particularly degraded due to damage due to a tornado, near the Biassono curve . In the area there are invasive exotic species which, despite interventions in the nineties, have continued to proliferate, preventing the regrowth of the native and characteristic plants of the Park.
The wood company in charge of the work will carry out selective cuts on the weeds, on the dead or unsafe specimens and at the same time will contain the growth of the younger invasive specimens. The activities will not concern the areas furthest away from public use, to protect the shelters and the habitat of the local fauna. The Autodrome will then plant 2,610 young oak, English oak, hornbeam and other ecologically coherent species. The new systems will be treated for five years with emergency irrigation and clearing until they are fully established.
The second intervention instead has the purpose of improving the composition and the floristic richness of the forest, also pursuing the enhancement of the aesthetics and usability of the places. The surface of the intervention is mainly distributed between the curves of Lesmo, Ascari, the north bank and the Alboreto. In the identified areas, about 54 hectares wide, 3 thousand new native trees will be planted including elms, ash and maple trees. Also for these lots, once they have been cleaned of dead, perishable or invasive plants, monitoring of the new grafts will be guaranteed for five years so that they can grow luxuriantly.
Commitment to sustainability
Alessandra Zinno , General Manager of Autodromo Nazionale Monza, explains: «As is well known, the Temple of Speed is located inside the Monza Park, one of the largest and most prosperous green spaces in Europe. It is therefore our duty to preserve it with practical and positive impact activities. Already with the last two editions of the ACI Rally Monza, we have shown how attentive the racetrack is to safeguarding the park , implementing, in a few weeks, environmental sustainability initiatives that have earned us recognition by the International Automobile Federation. , first of the 'FIA 1 Star' and then of the 'FIA 2 Stars'. The new forest improvement program continues in the same direction and highlights how, even in the long term, the protection of the green is at the top of the list of our company's objectives ».
The project, created by the will of the Monza National Circuit, is in fact part of the numerous sustainable proposals of the circuit. Among these, we also remember a recent agreement with the Urban Green Office of the Municipality of Monza for the embellishment of a garden that will soon be used as a lounge area in the Monza Experience activities. The circuit will in fact use 29 plants on loan (ficus benjamin, yucca, aralia and ivy) until now grown in the municipal greenhouses to furnish a green area of about 4 thousand square meters which will also have the purpose of enhancing the work of the municipal technicians.
"The partnership with the Monza National Circuit allows us to enhance the extraordinary work of caring for the green of the royal greenhouses", underlines the Councilor for Territorial Policies and the Environment Martina Sassoli . «They are a heritage of the city that in recent years we have also supported with innovative projects such as the one which, in collaboration with Soroptimist, has brought the ancient citrus fruits of Ferdinand of Habsburg back to the gardens of Villa Reale after more than two centuries. They are paths like this and like that of the Monza Experience that allow us to increase awareness and knowledge about the theme of environmental sustainability, stimulating a cultural change especially in the new generations. For this I thank the Director General of the Autodrome Alessandra Zinno for the sensitivity and collaboration that, once again, she has shown that she has ».

Audi wins the title of the Italian GT Endurance Championship in Monza
The Agostini-Ferrari-Drudi trio triumphs in the Temple of Speed in an uncertain race until the last lap. Victories for Milan in the Clio Cup Europe and Cerqui in the Porsche Carrera Cup Italy
The titles of three series were decided during the race weekend at the Autodromo Nazionale Monza . The drivers of the Italian Gran Turismo Endurance Championship, of the Clio Cup Europe and of the Porsche Carrera Cup Italia competed for the victory in their respective competitions, giving emotions to the spectators at the Autodrome and sitting on the sofa at home who followed the ACI Racing Weekend.
The results of the ACI Racing Weekend
The trio made up of Riccardo Agostini, Lorenzo Ferrari and Mattia Drudi gives Audi Sport Italia the victory of the Italian GT Endurance Championship . Great protagonist of the day is Drudi, who makes an extraordinary comeback on Lamborghini and Ferrari, direct rivals for the title, recovering from fourth place and closing the race on the top step of the podium. After a difficult start and a first part of endurance, with the Audi R8 LMS that had never pushed beyond the third position, Drudi became the protagonist of a series of qualifying laps in the wet, first overtaking Daniel's Ferrari 488 EVO Zampieri and Stefano Gai (Scuderia Baldini 27) and then taking advantage of the pit stop of the race leaders Andrea Amici, Alberto Di Folco and Stuart Middleton (Imperiale Racing), who finished second. Third place for the Ferrari # 27 of the Zampieri-Gai duo.
Triplet for the French team R-Ace GP on the podium of race-1 of the Formula Regional European Championship by Alpine . Winning the race, after taking pole position, is Hadrien David, followed by teammates Isack Hadjar and Zane Maloney, who have gained four positions each. This result is worth the victory in the constructors' ranking for the transalpine team, which arrived in the Tempio with a disadvantage on the Art Grand Prix. Hadjar instead wins race-2 ahead of Paul Aron (Prema Powerteam) and Hadrien.
Oliver Bearman (Van Amersfoort Racing) has won all three races of the Italian F4 Championship Powered by Abarth . The British driver, who arrived in Monza with the title already in his pocket, has placed behind his rivals in all the appointments in the Temple of Speed. In race-1 Bearman started a long battle with the very young Lorenzo Patrese, son of the former Formula 1 driver Riccardo, who saw his race ruined in the final by a contact with the Englishman himself. Andrea Kimi Antonelli (Prema Powerteam) and Joshua Dürksen (Muecke Motorsport) therefore finished behind Bearman. Bearman also triumphs in the wet in race-2 on Saturday afternoon, after a great comeback from seventh place. Second ends the other son of art of the championship, Sebastian Montoya of Prema Powerteam. Third place for Antonelli, who is confirmed in the same position also in race-3, behind Bearman and his Russian teammate Kiril Smal, who got on the second step of the podium.
Six Porsche Carrera Cup Italia drivers fought for the overall title in the last round of the season. The two races held on the Brianza asphalt were affected by the rain and gave a great show, with a close fight until the last corner. In the end it was Alberto Cerqui of the Q8 Hi Perform team, already leader of the standings before the Monza event, who won third place on Saturday afternoon and victory on Sunday morning. It was not enough for the second in the general classification, Alessandro Giardelli (Dinamic Motorsport), the triumph in race-1 ahead of Gianmarco Quaresmini (Tsunami RT) and Cerqui. In the second round, Cerqui won over Marzio Moretti (Bonaldi Motorsport) and Benedetto Strignano (AB Racing).
47 Clio Cup Europe drivers took to the track in the two races between the curbs of the Temple of Speed, honoring the last seasonal round of the series with battles. Nicolas Milan (Milan Competition) crossed the line first for the ninth time this year, winning race-1 on Saturday afternoon thanks to the penalty imposed on the virtual winner Felice Jelmini (PMA Motorsport), relegated to third position. On the second step of the podium went David Pouget (GPA Racing). Jelmini took his revenge in race-2, detaching the group from the start and closing with three seconds ahead of Milan and four over Filippo Berto (Oregon Team). With these results, Milan wins the overall standings and that of group D, while Marc Guillot, also of the Milan Competition team, those of groups A and C.

Time for verdicts for the ACI Sport championships in Monza
Between 29 and 31 October, the Autodromo Nazionale Monza will host the second round of the ACI Racing Weekend, for a total of 10 races. All the series of the Italian championships will take to the track: Gran Turismo Endurance, Italian F4 Championship powered by Abarth, Formula Regional European Championship by Alpine, Clio Cup Europe and Porsche Carrera Cup Italia.
There are ten races scheduled for the second weekend of the ACI Racing Weekend at the Autodromo Nazionale Monza. The event, which closes the racing season of the Italian championships after the opening again in the Temple of Speed last May, includes the races of five different series: Italian Gran Turismo Endurance Championship, Formula Regional European Championship by Alpine, Italian F4 Championship powered by Abarth, Clio Cup Europe and Porsche Carrera Cup Italia.
After the collective tests scheduled for today, all the series will run two races in Monza between Friday 29 October and Sunday 31 October, with the exception of the Italian Gran Turismo Endurance Championship, whose drivers will compete in a single 3-hour race on Sunday afternoon, and the Italian F4 Championship powered by Abarth, which has three 30-minute races + one lap between curbs of the Temple of Speed.
The fourth and final round of the Italian Gran Turismo Endurance Championship - a series of only GT3s - will be decisive for the assignment of the drivers' title. The Audi R8 (Audi Sport Italia) driven by Mattia Drudi, Lorenzo Ferrari and Riccardo Agostini has a lead of 3 points (40 to 37) over the Ferrari 488 EVO (Scuderia Baldini 27) of Daniel Zampieri and Stefano Gai and of 5 lengths on the Lamborghini Huracan driven by Andrea Amici, Alberto Maria Di Folco and Stuart Middleton (Imperiale Racing). Mathematically, Carrie Schreiner is still in the running for the title on the other Ferrari 488 GT3 Evo, but there are 14 points to recover from the top. The final race will start on Sunday at 13.45.
Everything has already been decided in the Italian F4 Championship powered by Abarth , the Tatuus T014 Abarth single-make championship (F.4, F.5 and F.6), which will open the racing program of the Brianza weekend. Bearman Oliver has already won the series, and his team (Van Amersfoort Racing) has already taken the constructors' title. In the last race of the season, the 35 drivers entered will therefore race only for glory.
The same goes for the Formula Regional European Championship by Alpine , in which the Swiss Grégoire Saucy already has the victory in his pocket with his 93 points advantage over his rivals. The fight is heated both for the second place in the world championship, with five drivers still mathematically in the running, and for the constructors' title, whose ranking currently sees the Art Grand Prix team ahead by just one length over R-Ace GP. They all race in Formula Alpine cars.
The last two championships to be held over the Monza weekend are the Clio Cup Europe and the Porsche Carrera Cup Italia . Among the Clio, it is a fight between teammates for the victory in the series. Arriving at the last race of the year, the French Marc Guillot and Anthony Jurado of the Milan Competition team are separated by 28 points, with the first in the lead.
In the Porsche single-make championship, however, there are still several drivers in the running for the overall title: Alberto Cerqui of Team Q8 HI Perform is first at the moment, with Alessandro Giardelli (Dinamic Motorsport - Centro Posche Bologna) just 6 points behind and Gianmarco Quaresmini (Tsunami RT - Porsche Center Brescia) of 22. Leonardo Caglioni, Marzio Moretti and Enrico Fulgenzi also have a faint hope of victory.
The event will be open to the public for the day of Sunday 31 October and spectators will be able to sit on four stands along the straight and the Ascari variant. Admission is free upon reservation of the seat on www.monzanet.it , while you will pay for the parking, with a cost of 15 euros for each car and 5 euros for each motorcycle. The parking ticket can only be purchased on the day of the event at the entrance to Vedano. All the live streams of the weekend and the related results are available on the website www.monzanet.it and www.acisport.it . (fm)
