Ford Italia presents The W Track
L'Ovale Blu takes to the track to promote gender equality in the world of eSports and racing
- In partnership with Autodromo Nazionale Monza and Assetto Corsa, Ford Italia has created a special track, inserting the curves that make up the word "Woman", to demonstrate how much more complex and difficult the path a woman must take to achieve her goals is.
- On the occasion of the International Women's Day, personalities from the institutional, sports and automotive world met on the theme of gender equality in the world of car racing, both real and simulated, and in society, opening new perspectives for the female universe
- The project will take the form of the Ford W University, days of driving courses on the track reserved for women, to train a new generation of pro-racers.
MONZA, Italy, March 2, 2022 - Both in the real world and in the video game world, women are often penalized for the simple fact of being women. And this is demonstrated by issues such as the gender pay-gap or the low presence of women in professional races. Despite this scenario, suit, gloves, helmet and controller begin to enter the life of women with interest and curiosity, ready to take to the track by testing their skills, for an unforgettable experience full of pure adrenaline.
From these assumptions, "The W Track" was born, the project developed by Ford Italia - in partnership with Autodromo Nazionale Monza and Assetto Corsa, a videogame created by Kunos Simulations - oriented to gender equality in the sim-racing sector: on the occasion of International Women's Day, a special edition of the legendary Italian circuit was created to simulate the demanding career path of women in this field, The W Track.
"We are very proud to present The W Track, a project that transcends itself and launches a very strong message, aimed at promoting inclusiveness and gender equality, opening a universal gateway to one of the most competitive and fun worlds of always, that of eSports”Says Fabrizio Faltoni, President and CEO of Ford Italy
The debate
The initiative, which received the support of the Equal Opportunities Council of the Lombardy Regional Council, involves various representatives of the institutional, automotive and gaming world in a round table, including: Fabrizio Faltoni, President and CEO of Ford Italy; Alessandra Zinno, DG Monza National Circuit; Giuseppina Fusco, ACI Vice President and AC Rome President; Enrico Gelfi, Founder of the Italian E-sports Observatory; Valerio Piersanti, Vice President Licensing and Partnerships Kunos Simulations; Letizia Caccavale, President of the Council for Equal Opportunities of the Lombardy Regional Council.
Moderated by the journalist Maria Latella, the protagonists of the confrontation placed the accent on the problem of gender equality in our country, starting precisely from the presence of women in the world of eSports, made up of lights and shadows.
In fact, in recent years there has been a significant increase in women in the world of sim-racing but not enough to be representative, if we consider professional competitions where, on the other hand, the presence of men, aged between 21 and 34, is predominant. years [1] .
Gender disparity, which entails an inevitable social gap, is accompanied by situations of deficit in which the female universe is forced to continually confront each other in the world of work and in sports, without the possibility of having a winning model of reference. Furthermore, in several areas, there is still an under-representation of the female world in top positions, with a gender wage gap that seems to have become physiological by now.
Alessandra Zinno, General Manager of Autodromo Nazionale Monza comments: "The partnership with Ford and Assetto Corsa stems from the harmony and unity of views between the three brands on these issues. Associating the name of two companies that have their core business in the automotive sector with a project of social relevance, not strictly anchored to track dynamics, can become a starting point for the future development of other shared proposals ".
Valerio Piersanti, Vice President Licensing and Partnerships Kunos Simulations comments: "We have enthusiastically accepted Ford's proposal to work on this project, and thanks to the versatility of Assetto Corsa we have been able to give life to this virtual modification of the Monza racetrack. Our Sim Racer community appreciates talent and passion regardless of gender, and therefore we believe that the world of esports can be an engaging way to break down barriers to the female world that have no reason to exist.
From words to deeds: Ford W University
From real to virtual racing, Ford's goal is to create the most inclusive team in the world of eSports starting from Fordzilla, the team built on Ford's heritage in the world of real racing, to compete at the highest levels even in virtual ones. and that, at the moment, sees only one female exponent in the roster of runners, captain Sara Stefanizzi (aka Kurolily).
The Ford initiative in support of women does not end with The W Track but continues with two other events, aimed at inspiring and qualifying a different generation of future riders: in the coming months, in fact, the Ford W University project, days of sports driving courses on real and virtual tracks reserved for women, with the support of the teams of drivers from Ford Driving University and the best professional sim-racers. The testimony of a concrete commitment that Ford Italia wants to carry out, beyond the anniversary of 8 March.
"The fact that there is only one woman in Team Fordzilla is our fault. We know future pro gamers are out there but we haven't looked for them enough. It is clear that we have to do things differently. We cannot win the race without even starting it and for this reason we have decided to take to the track by organizing training days dedicated to women”Says Fabrizio Faltoni, President and CEO of Ford Italy.
Ford Motor Company Commitment
For more than a century, the Ford brand has been a pioneer in offering opportunities to people, regardless of race, sex, ability, sexual orientation and social class, creating a culture of belonging that has its roots in diversity understood as a plus capable of generate innovation and change.
It is no coincidence that, for the fourth consecutive year, Bloomberg recognized Ford among 418 companies in its 2022 Bloomberg Gender-Equality Index in 45 countries and regions.
When it comes to diversity in particular, Ford aims to become the most inclusive and diverse global company. The Blue Oval Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) policy also addresses some issues that make up the objectives of the 2030 Agenda launched by the United Nations for sustainable development. In particular, with reference to Goal 5 relating to the achievement of gender equality, Jim Hackett (former president and CEO of Ford Motor Company) shared and signed the principles of the empowerment of women of the United Nations on behalf of Ford Motor Company in 2020 .
The first of these principles concerns high-level corporate leadership and focuses on the absolute strategic priority that represents the emancipation of women for the company. The suggested actions are aimed at establishing company-wide goals and targets for gender equality and measuring progress through clear performance indicators, reviewing the requirements for membership of the BoD and other works councils, to remove any discrimination or prejudice against women.
In support of this vision, Ford focuses on increasing women's pay and creating a culture where women are not forced to face more obstacles than their male counterparts in their career advancement.
Gender equality and inclusion are therefore values that accompany Ford in the development of a corporate strategy capable of breaking down the barriers of inequality, at all levels. The Women of Ford project is part of this context, created by the Blue Oval through the training of a group of employees who work solely for the purpose of satisfying the needs of women, through the achievement of a common vision that foresees the affirmation and professional growth of women in the company environment.
The aim of this initiative is to create an inclusive work environment that fosters the authenticity of people and social equality. Women of Ford starts from these assumptions for the achievement of its strategic objectives, starting from the increase in the percentage of women at all company levels and the involvement of men in the company, promoting them to "supporters" and "allies".
Quotes
Letizia Caccavale, President of the Equal Opportunities Council of the Lombardy Regional Council
"I am delighted to be able to bring the contribution of our Equal Opportunities Council to this important initiative. We have in common the concrete and constant commitment to raise awareness on the issue of gender equality. The Equal Opportunities Council has the issue of discrimination against working mothers very much at heart and with the annual Parità Virtuosa Award it promotes all those actions that help and support women and men in the work-life balance. There are and are more and more good practices to be valued in our territory and we are enthusiastically committed to communicating and disseminating these practices in the belief that motherhood is a true social value and we must understand its significance."
Giuseppina Fusco, president of ACI Rome and vice president of the Automobile Club of Italy
“Women at the wheel are nowadays a preponderant presence on our roads and the many work and family needs are transforming women into increasingly present and skilled drivers. In the world of motor sport, however, women are still few. Suffice it to say that in 70 years of Formula 1 only five have driven a single-seater. Those who have competed in world competitions have become legendary, such as Michèle Mouton in rallies or Maria Teresa De Filippis and Lella Lombardi in F1. The need to recognize women equal opportunities in sports - continues Fusco - found recognition with the establishment, by the 2009 FIA World Council, of the Commission for women in motorsport (WMC), chaired by Michelle Mouton. The ACI, as a Federation for Automotive Sport and a member of the FIA, promotes the implementation of the guidelines drawn up by the Commission to encourage the entry and participation of women in sport, but is also committed to affirming their presence in engineering and technical as well as in managerial tasks. Not surprisingly, the General Manager of the Monza National Circuit is a woman, as is the Vice President of ACI and numerous managers at the helm of provincial Automobile Clubs ”.
Alessandra Zinno, General Manager of Autodromo Nazionale Monza
“Inclusiveness and social sustainability are growing values in our company and principles towards which we pay the utmost attention. At the Autodromo, we seek a quality policy and criteria of wage equity based on merit and skills, regardless of the male and female gender, without seeking arithmetic criteria of parity. Furthermore, in the last year we have implemented initiatives that favor a socially sustainable business approach and provide a different image of the circuit also to our stakeholders. Among these, we remember the collaboration with some social cooperatives, the organization of non-profit events and the participation in the awareness campaign 'The fight against violence is #AffareNostro', against physical and verbal violence against women, in collaboration with the Municipality of Monza. The partnership with Ford and Assetto Corsa stems from the harmony and unity of views between the three brands on these issues. Associating the name of two companies that have their core business in the automotive sector with a project of social relevance, not strictly anchored to track dynamics, can become a starting point for the future development of other shared proposals ".
Enrico Gelfi, Co-founder of the Italian eSports Observatory
“With the OIES we were among the first to propose an analytical research dedicated to the Women & eSports relationship. If on the one hand it is good news for us - which we confirm the role of market trend setter - on the other hand it is bad news for the movement - which shows that it has not developed the right sensitivity for this topic. And this ambiguity also translates into the data, made up of lights and shadows. What can be deduced from the numbers recorded thanks to the collaboration of Demoskopea Consulting is that, despite suffering various limits and difficulties, mainly due to the cultural impact of our society, the female side of eSports guarantees significant opportunities, in particular on the marketing front. In summary: the space for companies that want to dare more and stand out by focusing on female gamers is there and it is important ".

Royal Villa of Monza, a neoclassical palace to be discovered
The Royal Villa of Monza, also known as the Royal Palace of Monza, is one of the main monuments of the Lombard city, together with the Cathedral. A jewel of neoclassical architecture, signed by Piermarini, which has nothing to envy to the more noble Regge of Caserta and Versailles. Furthermore, the royal palace is surrounded by the magnificent Monza Park, the largest fenced green area in Europe, capable of housing the Monza National Circuit. There are few people in the world who do not know, at least by reputation, the Royal Palace of Caserta or the Palace of Versailles. Much less known, however, is the Reggia di Monza , also known as the Royal Villa . Yet, the imposing and elegant Brianza palace has nothing to envy to the other two famous royal residences. Indeed, the sumptuous park that surrounds it is the largest in Europe , among those fenced (so much so that it houses the Autodromo Nazionale Monza ). Therefore, if you spend a few days of vacation in Monza , you must necessarily plan a visit to the Royal Villa, which offers a truly unique show. And this article is a good opportunity to get to know it a little better and take note of the essential tourist information.
History and architecture of the Royal Villa of Monza, Piermarini's masterpiece
Let's begin this short virtual journey to discover the Reggia di Monza by scrolling through the fundamental stages of its history. The Royal Villa was built in the second half of the 1700s , more precisely between 1777 and 1780 . The project bears the signature of Giuseppe Piermarini , a famous architect of the time and a leading exponent of neoclassicism . The imposing construction was commissioned by Archduke Ferdinand of Habsburg and his mother Maria Theresa of Austria . The building, in fact, was used as a country residence of the royal dynasty, at least until 1796, the year of the descent into Italy of the armies of Napoleon Bonaparte . At that point, the luxurious residence passed into the hands of the French emperor's stepson, Eugene of Beauharnais . It was, however, only a parenthesis. On the fall of Napoleon, in 1818, the Royal Palace returned to the Austrians. In the second half of the 1800s, the Villa changed owners again. After the annexation of the Lombard Venetian to Piedmont, in fact, the owners became the Savoy family and was particularly loved by King Umberto I , who elected it as his summer residence and subjected it to profound renovations and transformations . The monarch was even buried there, after being killed by Gaetano Bresci. At that point, however, the Villa was linked to a tragic and sad event, which made it fall into disuse. Vittorio Emanuele II , in fact, no longer wanted to reside there and had part of the furnishings transported to the Quirinal palaces in Rome. The royal ownership of the Villa finally ended in 1934, when it was donated to the municipalities of Milan and Monza .
The external aspect
The Villa of Monza has the characteristic U-shape , typical of the royal palaces of the 18th century. The style of the facade is linear and essential and has simple decorations , which give it an elegant but rigorous aspect , without colonnades or gables. The choice was not only dictated by stylistic needs but also by precise political choices of the Austrian court. Italy, in fact, was an occupied territory and the Habsburg emperors did not want to give the impression of flaunting their overbearing wealth to their subjects.
Interiors
The first floor of the Royal Villa is occupied by the reception rooms, the ballrooms and the room used for lunches. The second floor , on the other hand, is dedicated to the bedrooms of gifts and guests. The different halls and rooms (a total of 740 , for a total area of over 22,000 square meters) are decorated with gilded stuccoes, paintings and frescoes. Unfortunately, the tormented final phase of use of the Royal Palace of Monza by the Savoy family meant that the palace is today practically emptied of its original furnishings , which were of absolute value.
The gardens
The Gardens of the Royal Villa of Monza are one of its main attractions. They extend over an area of about 40 hectares and are organized in the English style . The apparent spontaneity of the arrangement and vegetation is instead the result of precise and measured choices by Piermarini. Inside the Gardens, you can appreciate numerous characteristic elements and views, such as the lake , the classical temple , the rock garden and the Cave of Polyphemus .
Also discover the Monza Park, which surrounds the Royal Villa
The Rose Garden
The Rose Garden of the Royal Villa was commissioned by Nino Fumagalli and designed by Vittorio Faglia and Francesco Clerici . It is divided into several sections, depending on the types of roses that are grown. There are over 400 varieties , some of which are grown to be presented at international competitions.
The Belvedere
The Belvedere is the top floor of the Palace , once home to the servants' apartments and therefore characterised by low ceilings and rather spartan rooms. From up there, however, you can enjoy a breathtaking view of the Monza Park .
Il Serrone (or Orangerie)
Originally, the Royal Villa housed numerous greenhouses , as attested by documents of the time. Only one, however, has reached today intact and it is precisely the Orangerie, that is the one destined for citrus fruits . 100 metres long, 6 metres wide and 7 metres high, the structure is equipped with 26 windows that guarantee sunlight throughout the day .

ELMS will return to Monza in 2022
With a change to the 2022 calendar, the third round of the European Le Mans Series will be held on Sunday 3 July in Italy at the Autodromo Nazionale Monza. The Temple of Speed will thus replace the event scheduled at the Hungaroring in Hungary on the same date.
The European Le Mans Series returned to Monza in 2017 and the circuit has hosted one championship round per year ever since. The move therefore involves two rounds in Italy, with the 4 Hours of Imola on May 15th. The two Italian races will precede and follow the 2022 24 Hours of Le Mans, which will take place on 11/12 June.
Frederic Lequien, CEO of Le Mans Endurance Management , comments: "We regret that ELMS will not be able to race in Hungary in July but due to local regulations and restrictions, the Hungaroring Management was unable to meet the conditions of the contract.
Thanks to its historicity and the dynamism of the track, Monza is certainly appreciated by most of the competitors in the ELMS paddock and has given us some of the best races since the return of the series in 2017. I would like to thank the whole Monza team for their precious collaboration and for allowing the series to compete in the third round of the 2022 season this summer ".
Alessandra Zinno, General Manager of Autodromo Nazionale Monza: “We are very satisfied that the European Le Mans Series wanted to return to Monza again this year to consolidate an appointment that is becoming a tradition on our calendar. The real result is that the Temple of Speed will become the House of Endurance for a couple of weeks thanks to ELMS and WEC, present in two consecutive weekends in July. Compared to 2021, when only a thousand spectators were able to watch the sports battles live, we will try to fill the stands and make the two weekends a show on and off the track. Thanks to the 4 Hours of Monza, the centenary season is enriched with another important appointment that motorsport fans will certainly appreciate ".
Autodromo Nazionale Monza protagonist of The Record Show on Canale 5 and of the Chi report on the career of Gerry Scotti
The outdoor footage of the broadcast was filmed in the Temple of Speed. On the cover of the magazine, the portrait of the conductor with the photos taken in the circuit.
The Autodromo Nazionale Monza is the location of the external rehearsals of the Lo Show dei Record program, broadcast from 6 March in prime time on Canale 5. The transmission of the Guinness World Records is conducted by Gerry Scotti who has chosen the Temple of Speed to be portrayed in the celebratory service on his career today on the weekly Chi . The circuit thus becomes the protagonist of two important initiatives by Mediaset and the Mondadori magazine.
The outdoor shots of the Show dei Record were recorded for a couple of weeks in February in the wide spaces of the circuit. The paddocks and the track have been the scene of spectacular athletic gestures and breathtaking feats that spectators will be able to witness following the episodes of the program on Canale 5. The Autodromo Nazionale Monza, an already evocative place in itself, thanks to much of the footage made at night, will be transformed on the television screens into an even more fascinating scenario between contrasts of light, shadows and special effects.
The plant has also become the perfect stage to honor the brilliant career of Gerry Scotti, host of the program and anchorman of the Mediaset networks, whose 30 years of profession were celebrated through a photo shoot in some of the most famous points of the track. The Milanese presenter was immortalized by the well-known photographer Massimo Sestini aboard a historic Jaguar E 4.2 Coupé on the main curves of the circuit and on the straight.
Scotti at the end of the service, published on the cover of the weekly magazine directed by Alfonso Signorini, left his signature and a dedication on the free hospitum of the Autodrome, where the autographs of the winning drivers of the races are collected. The General Manager Alessandra Zinno honored the showman with a personalized trophy in honor of his many years of profession.
Alessandra Zinno explains: “The Autodromo Nazionale Monza is confirmed as an ideal space also for filming and photo shoots. The requests for these activities are constantly growing thanks to the large spaces, the context of the Park and the history that the Circuit tells in all its parts. We too have reached a real record: we are celebrating one hundred years since the founding of the racetrack and this anniversary gives a special nuance to all the events and activities of 2022. I am happy that Gerry Scotti has chosen us to honor his long and prestigious career. Thanks to the shooting of the Show dei Record and the cover of Chi , the Temple of Speed offers itself to the sight of millions of Italians who can then join us in person to follow the races and visit the facilities and the track with our guided tours " .

There are those who aspire to get behind the wheel of a Ferrari , the symbol par excellence of speed and made in Italy style, and those who prefer to imagine themselves aboard an elegant and aggressive Porsche . The list, in fact, could go on for a long time, because every motor lover carries a model and a team in his heart that make him vibrate and excite. What they all have in common is the dream of experiencing the thrill of being a driver for a day , whizzing on the asphalt of a real track, right where great motorsport champions usually compete for first place. An unattainable goal? Of course not. Driving a racing car is a dream that can come true . The opportunities offered by private circuits and large racetracks are now many and very valid. Let's see how to do it.
The requirements to become a pilot for one day
The first thing to underline is that to drive a supercar or a single-seater inside a regulation circuit, in the context of a non-professional activity, no additional requirements are necessary compared to those required to get behind the wheel of any car, on the highway or in the middle of city traffic. Therefore, you must be of age and have already obtained a type B driving license , that is the one commonly provided for cars. The events that allow you to become a pilot for a day , in fact, always provide for the assistance of qualified personnel, which guarantees fun within the limits of safety. And who doesn't have these requirements? Should he give up? If his goal is to drive on the track like a real driver, unfortunately he has to put that aside. But you can always experience the thrill of sitting next to an expert driver, for example in a Gran Turismo car equipped with a passenger seat.

CHI: the International Historical Commission
Made up of 30 members, representing all the historic clubs affiliated with the FIA, the International Historical Commission promotes the conservation and enjoyment of historic vehicles, the oldest examples of which are important witnesses to both the second industrial revolution and the economic boom.
CHI - which works in close collaboration with FIVA (Fédération Internationale de Véhicules Anciens) - studies legislation and issues relating to historic vehicles, interacting globally with national clubs, to ensure that legislators support legislation compatible with maintenance and responsible use of historic vehicles. Particular attention is paid to registration, taxation, maintenance, road safety, pollution and low-emission zones, as well as the role of historic cars in the collective cultural heritage.

As the highest body of the FIA, the Senate - made up of 16 members - debates those matters relating to FIA management and general policy that cannot be covered by one of the World Councils. Its main responsibilities are, therefore, financial.
Under the advice of the Monitoring Committee, the Senate closes the accounts, prepares the budgets of the World Council and manages the consolidated financial statements. Within this mandate, it is also responsible for commercial matters which may come to the attention of the FIA.
